The Mariners Went All-In At the MLB Trade Deadline: ‘This Team Deserved It’

There was plenty for Suárez, Dipoto, and the rest of the organization to celebrate following the trade deadline. The Mariners, heading into Thursday night’s game against the Texas Rangers within playoff contention, fortified their lineup by adding more than just Suárez, who boasts 36 home runs this season and is tied with Seattle’s Cal Raleigh for the major league lead with 87 RBIs. Just a week prior, the Mariners made another transaction with the D-backs to acquire the power-hitting first baseman Josh Naylor. Dipoto believes they secured the “best bats” available, augmenting a lineup that already ranks fifth in the majors for home runs.
“This is the best lineup we’ve had since I’ve been here,” Dipoto stated confidently. “Without question.” Since being hired as the Mariners’ general manager in 2015, and later promoted to president of baseball operations in 2021, Dipoto has steered several competitive teams in Seattle. While the Mariners have only qualified for the playoffs once during Dipoto’s tenure, they have boasted a winning record in six of the past nine seasons.
Although Dipoto’s teams have often been in contention leading up to the trade deadline, this year’s acquisitions of Suárez, Naylor, and veteran left-handed reliever Caleb Ferguson are more aggressive than past moves. Dipoto noted that while his mindset remained similar to previous years, he was more open to acquiring players who will be free agents at the end of the season.
“We feel like this team deserved it — the opportunity to see if we can win the World Series,” Dipoto shared. “We believe we have one of the strongest lineups in our league. Our rotation has shown that it can compete with the best if our guys perform as expected.”

This Mariners squad is, in many aspects, deeper than previous teams.
